I have an 89 2.6 190E. When the car is cold, like first thing in the morning, the car starts fine. just turn the key, no gas pedal, and it begins running perfectly.
However, when the car is warm, sometimes it will not start. The starter turns over, but the engine won't fire. I might take 10 tries until it begins running. Once it starts running after one of these hard starts the engine runs fine, it does not sputter or miss, as if it were flooded. An ignition problem?
When you first turn your ignition on but don't start turning the starter motor, if you listen carefully you should hear the fuel pump buzz for about 2 seconds as it primes the sytem.
Listen for this noise and when you are familiar with it, listen to see if it is ther when the car won't start. If there is no noise, it is probably a faulty fuel pump relay.

Fuel pump relay is located behind the wall/shield in the battery compartment. The fuel pump(s) are located on the driver's side rear suspension area. Another item to check is the cold start valve, near the fuel distributor.
I have in a way same kinda problem with my 2.6.But mine does start though. If its cold, it starts perfectly ok, but when its warm, it does start but it seems the car is strugling to bring the idle to normal. This happens for about 3 seconds or so, and then the idle b comes normal. I hear that sound that comes b 4 starting, so it seems the fuel pump is working ok. I dont know what could it b then.
I have a 1992 190E 2.3 that is also hard to start usually cold ( california cold :-) ) 49,000 miles
I tried listening for a fuel pump,, can't hear anything.
Talked to a non dealer mechanic.. he says the Bosch injectors will not supply fuel until there is oil pressure... !
I have always felt this car cranks a bit slow, I have watched the oil gauge during start.. seems when the hardest to start the oil gauge seemed to have a delay even after starting.
he also said there is a special OIL filter that has a check valve in it.. so if plain Jane oil filters are used it adds to the problem.
I have not checked into the oil filter yet.. what I have seen is all the common brands do not list a replacement filter. Manual says go to MB.
