Hi all, I'm new to the forum and have had my 86' 190D for about a year. I LOVE that car! Slightly lowered on Audi A4 17's with 45 series tires and a 5 speed manual with a 4 cylinder diesel. I'm wondering if anyone here has ever converted to a 5 cylinder? If so, is it an easy swap or involved with lots of fab work? I couldnt find a thread answering this specific question so I figured I ask here. Thanks!

Any swap will have complications. So, why stop at 5 cylinders?

Consider an OM606 turbo (177 PS, 130 kW, 174 hp). Install the OM603.971 injection pump and oil pan on the OM606 turbo engine, and there is no electronics upgrade. North America, in W124 and W210.
W201 OM606

Or, an OM603 turbo 3.0L (147 PS, 108 kW, 145 hp). Avoid the 3.5L due to reliability problems.

w201 OM603/OM606

Or, an OM605 turbo 5-cyl (152 PS, 112 kW, 150 HP). North America, in W202.

Or, an OM604 4-cyl (95 PS, 70 kW, 94 hp), in W210 E220D.

An excellent article descrebing the engine differences can be found here, translated from German.

If you just want a stock vehicle, then the most efficient conversion is to just buy the car which already has the engine you want (recomend 5-cyl turbo), considering the value and reliability of this make. The MT5 transmission swap is probably easier than the engine swap.

Sorry, I guess driveshaft length only changes between MT5 and AT4.

It is possible to put in either an OM602 non-turbo, or an OM602 Turbo, without using any non-standard parts. The transmision will bolt right up to the OM60x series engines.

These cars were available with either the 601, 602, or 602 Turbo engines in the USA. From a mechanical standpoint, all engines will bolt in the place of one of the others with the correct motor mounts, exhaust, and the correct W201 specific parts.

For any other diesel swap (OM603, 606, 605, 604) you will have a much more complicated project. The OM604 and 605 engines were never offered in the USA (oh how I wish they were).
