Mercedes 180E specifications

This sheet was squished into the owner's manual folder in the glovebox of my bare-bones 180E 'Poverty Benz', a W201 model variant conceived in the middle of a recession and designed to squeeze under a luxury car tax threshold by making the specification as basic as possible.

Given how well equipped something like a cheap and cheerful Hyundai Getz is these days, it's a bit of a laugh to see that the 180E was so basic Mercedes had to resort to listing features such as "glove compartment".

Haha, that is a good laugh. Despite what it was built for, or the taxes it was built to avoid, I would take one of these little guys in a heartbeat.

I wonder how your gas mileage is? I can break 30mpg (as high as 34mpg!) on a long trip in my 2.3 8v no problem...well...as long as I'm trying. I usually get 27-29mpg on the highway.

1992 190E 2.3 8v (converted to 5-speed)
27,045 miles as of 9/31/08
160,000 miles as of 7/25/14

1965 Shelby Cobra 427S/C (351W engine)
14.5k miles as of 7/25/14

The R16 resistor. Read CAREFULLY!

My best economy with the 180E so far is 6.39l/100km (measured over 253km of rural roads) which I think translates to 44.2 MPG Imperial or 36.8 MPG US.

The most economical petrol W201 is the 2.0 model, particularly the earlier non-cat 5 speed manual ones which did as little as 5.8l/100km (48.7/40.6 MPG Imperial/US). The cat-equipped 1.8 uses a shade more fuel (like 5% more) than the cat-equipped 2.0, probably reflecting the fact the a 1.8 litre engine with this level of technology is smaller than ideal for shifting a car of this size and weight with maximum efficiency.

Mercedes only came up with the 1.8 M102 so they'd have an entry-level option to take over from the base 190 when they stopped making the carburetor engine in 1990 and because Germany and other countries calculated road tax on engine capacity. It was more of a solution for a marketing/pricing problem than an engineering solution.

Hm, I figured since the 1.8 was more of a bare-bones model, it would weigh less. Remove the cat and I bet you would gain some extra miles per tank.

The better any car is, the more likely that the engineers had more say on the design of the final product rather than...anyone else really. Like most of the 190s!!

Your point is correct. W201's were part of the last generation of MBs to be built with the engineers in charge of the company. This is why all w201s are so durable.
