Swap a 2.6L engine in 4 cyl 190E?

Has anyone done a 2.6L conversion on a 4cyl Mercedes? These engines seem to be plentiful. The 4 cyl is pretty good for me but where I live the car is too old to get emissions so i can basically put whatever I want under the hood. Its a 5 spd. How difficult would it be? I assume no fabrication? are we looking at removing the front end to slide the engine in? I guess it would be best to get a wrecked car? Shortened driveshaft? same 5spd trans will bolt up? according to the EPA, its only a 1 MPG hit.

I thought it might be a good winter project

The radiator, cross member, AC condenser, hood latch, flywheel and a few other parts are totally different.


87 300D turbo + 5spd
93 190e 2.3 + Megasquirt 1
92 190e 2.6 5spd + Megasquirt 2
97 E300 DIESEL

Should be a fairly simple swap since it's all bolt in basically. No fabrication work needed if you have a good 2.6 donor car to get parts from.

That's really a good idea and one I think I'm going to look into further. I might swap my engine if I could find the right 2.6 car that's wrecked and cheap.

A 6 cylinder dual mass flywheel will be the hardest part to find.

If you're going to go to the trouble of fitting a six cylinder, you might as well drop in the 3 litre M103 engine from the 300E if you get them over there. Fairly common conversion in New Zealand.

the springs and struts, ecm, and wire harness. and the cross member on the 2.6 is welded on instead of bolted. I would think you need new motor mounts also. another thing is the horn location is different. this is what I can think of at work but i bet there is more.

+1 on that there is no reason to do the 2.6 when the 3.0 would be the same amount of work with a better results in the end.
