Stuck ignition tumbler solution... Alternate method

1993 190e 2.3

She has about 130k and the key was turning smooth and fine, but with out any warning the ignition tumbler is JAMMED. I mean STUCK!

So, I have read the shop manual and have a plan of action but need to know if any of you who have had to deal with the key not moving from position #0,

Have you ever done this, and had it work:

I'm weary of drilling into anything before I can be sure it will work.

If my vibrating sander does not work, I am either going to do this or go for the full Un install procedure witch includes the gauge cluster and wheel.

My 93 2.6 used to stick too when I try to start my engine. Used WD 40 to clean it out. Had to jiggle a few times while trying to take the key out, but Im not sure if yours is beyond that already.

There is one rule...there are no rules!

Yeah, I have ordered a new tumbler, just getting the old one out is hard because i have been trying for 2 days straight to get the key to turn from position #0 to #1 accessory on. If I cant get it today, I'm going to have to take wheel, gauge pod and surrounding plastics off and remove the entire unit.

keep twiddling with it. move the key slightly out [don't bottom it] and very gently jiggle it. also, ensure your steering column is not locked, and do NOT let it lock or you'll make the job harder. good luck.

Steering column is locked and car will not move from park. Is this still a problem with the tumbler. hope so...

-Currently on Day 3 of trying to jiggle they key in the ignition trying to get the key to turn.

and the key works perfect on all locks and trunk.

The problem isn't the key, it's the ignition tumbler.
You need to turn the tumbler to the 2 o'clock position if you want to have any hope of getting it out by inserting a needle to release the tumbler's spring so you can turn the ignition metal cover loose to expose the tumbler.

hey J300 if the column is locked you'll need to move the wheel side to side to find the sweet spot where the lock pin is not loading up against the tumbler.

grab the wheel with your left hand at 12:00, rotate it back/forth gently while jiggling key and trying to gently turn towards on. The INSTANT you get it to go, do NOT turn it back. Follow my how-to and replace the tumbler immediately.

Yep, thanks guys. Time to go try for another hour or so. If it does, I'll leave it in position number one and pull the tumbler. If it does not come loose in the next hour or so I'm going to get it towed, then remove steering wheel and gauge cluster and removing the whole assembly out and taking it to dealer for replacement.
