Hi, my 2.6 190E auto seems to have a problem when I'm driving and i wonder if any of you can shed light on it?
Whats happening is it seems to be holding a gear rather than changing up so I'm getting a lot of people looking at me as though I'm intentionally thrashing the motor about when really I'm not its just it won't change bloody gear.
I understand it might be worth changing the gearbox oil.. is there a guide on how to do this anywhere? A local mechanic recently told me that they are sealed for life on the 190E's.. although I'm doubting this.. can anybody please help?
is it hold the gear and toping out your rpm? sometimes it may seem like it's holding but just hasn't had the time to change...when it does this,,instead of keeping your foot on the gas, let off a bit then accelerate again, and see if that helps change the gear
relax...and drive it like that..unless you like it the other way topping out on rpms. your cars sounds/acts just like mine, nothing sounds to be wrong with it. if you are still worried, take it to a reputable person/shop and ask them to do a compression test for you.
Change the Transmission fluid to MB Spec. AT fluid only.... again..... only. The change should include the the contents of the torque converter (so you'll kill all doubts reharding the fluid quality). Fluid level should be checked always
As dropping the pan is a must, change the filter and pan gasket also
Most importantly, it seems that your K2 kit spring is loosing tension and it is an easy change when you drop the pan. Ask (and stress it) the trusted mechanic to chack the modulator for you in regard of the vacuum
If you are going to perform all the above and the problem persists, let us know through this thread.... I repeat, through this thread
If you have access to reputable AT shop that can perform a dyno test test for you, it'll be a good thing to do and let us know
check your kick down switch. behind the gas pedal if its stuck down it will rev all the way up, (on many of the years), changing the oil is pretty easy unless you want to drain the torque convertor. i would just drain the pan and refill it, should take 2-3 quarts.
These cars are deliberately designed to maintain low gear when the engine is cold. If the car is doing this when the motor is hot, then you have a transmission failure caused perhaps by an incompetent mechanic who monkeyed with your transmission in the past.
Do the obvious first. Check the AT fluid level. Dextron II or III works for the 2.6.
