With my 16 valve I've inherited completely aftermarket audio setup which included better speakers all around, headunit and huge sub with 2 amps in the trunk.
Original speaker wiring was also deleted.
Now I'd really want to keep the car original so I'm considering 2 choices here:
1. Restore everything to stock
2. Remove sub, 1 amp and HU. Keep aftermarket speakers and one amp. Install original Becker and use speaker outputs to feed the amp.
My question: Has anybody tried the latter setup? How bad did it sound?
The main problem w/ the second setup is that the Becker only has two channel outputs (25x2) So you'd have to figure out a way to split the two channels into 4 speaker channels like the original fader did.
If you're willing to spend a lot of $$$ you can get the new Becker Grand Prix for around $500 USD. Looks pretty OEM but has all the latest features BECKER GRAND PRIX 7990 CD/MP3/WMA TUNER IPOD CAR RADIO on eBay (end time 08-Aug-09 23:33:49 BST)
i had a "stock" system, for the original equipment it was ok traveling at low speeds, on the highway traveling fast, with all the other sounds around it was hard to hear the radio clearly, i'd go with choice #2, and try selling the stuff you pull out on here, lots of people change out their sound system
Its because you dont. Why would you want to go backasswards is what you need to ask yourself. Going from a 4 channel system to a 2 channel again or a 5 channel system back to a 2 channel system.
Go right ahead if you got the money and time to burn. If you havent noticed...355 has a kick ass Alpine sound system in his car with a top of the line Alpine PDX 5 channel amplifier. I know because I heard it last week.
Becker used to make all the radios for Mercedes. Thats why he suggested the Becker to main "originality" as well as being updated at the same time unless you could find a pristine condition Becker unit from an old model or a newer Alpine Mercedes unit.
well I guess you could tap the speaker level inputs after the fader into a amp and then run 4 channels. Never thought of that solution before. If you plan to follow this route, you probably should get a sound processor like a JL Cleansweep since it improves and cleans up the signal for the amp. I imagine if you followed this setup, it would sound pretty good. But running the becker's signal straight into your amp probably wouldn't sound as good.
I only suggested the newer Grand Prix because you're not going to have an easy time trying to source all the original wiring (you mentioned that the original was deleted) If all your original wiring was still there it would be very easy.
To rewire back to stock you'll have to run the speaker wires from the Becker's two channels, down to the center console fader, and then run wires to each speaker location. The original speaker also used some sort of plug, so if you can't find wiring you'll have to splice it together. Hopefully the alarm plug is still there as well. IIRC the Becker had something like 3 different plugs in the back.
