Ok folks,
We have a nice breakfast ahead of us then all day to check out baby Benz. Last night's meeting was fantastic, we have so much in common as Benz nuts for sure.
This morning we will focus on adjusting the CIS while checking fuel flow and pressure. We will have a cookout that you folks missed and we are inviting dancing girls that pop out of cakes. Too bad, I know some of you would have enjoyed that.
Pictures to follow... of the repairs
Progress!
Peter figured out that the car was running cool, specifically on cylinder 1. After he pulled the spark plug we found a caked up thick coat of hard dark matter.
In addition, the spark plugs that I had were platinum so we went ahead and replaced them with copper.
We narrowed down the cool engine running issue to the fan clutch sensor: I have the wrong one. The one in my car is for the 16V which operates at a different temperature range than an 8V. I have to get that replaced before we proceed any further. For now the car ran just fine and no stalling after I disconnected the fan clutch sensor.
We are now waiting for the charcoal to get nice and hot and then we got burgers and steaks.
Cheers
Correct. This morning I said that we needed to inspect the spark plugs on a cold motor. Drewprof pulled plug number 2 then plug number 1. The difference was stunning.
First, the plugs were Bosch Super Plus yttrium enhanced copper plugs. I never recommend any plug other than pure copper for this motor. We obtained a set of Champion traditional copper plugs.
Plug number 2 was carbonized dark while plug 1 was fouled heavily.
The crud appeared to be a brittle rubbery substance. Drewprof reported that he used an anti seize compound on the plugs. The possibility was that this compound got on to the tip of the plug and burned as the plug stayed in the motor.
However, there was a better explanation.
During a test drive with passengers in warm weather, the car failed to achieve 80 Celsius. This was an unacceptable over-cooling condition. An incorrect clutch fan sensor will be replaced with a proper spec sensor. Hence, the likelihood was that excessive cooling at the number 1 cylinder deprived the plug of the cleansing attributes of proper operating temperature.
As an interim fix, we unplugged the clutch fan sensor. This allowed the motor to reach roughly 90 Celsius.
There was no stalling, bucking or surging. Idle is a touch low but we will not adjust anything until we can sustain proper operating temperatures and clean plugs. We also cleaned the plug ports in the head so that the plugs do not introduce dirt into the cylinder.
If the new set of plugs fails quickly, we'll react with whatever steps are necessary to stop fouling. There is a freshly machined head standing by. We will not take any further action on the fuel distributor until these other issues are resolved.
So far the mission was a success but we will watch out for plug fouling for the time being.
Lomtevas, thank you so much for coming in with your family. It was an honor to have you over at our humble house. I hope you enjoyed our company and our little fury kids.
This was exactly what BW is all about! My wife and I are very appreciative and are thanking even the one that couldn't make it because you have helped in other ways, such as encouragement and sanity checks whenever I started to fly off the handle because of the car's issue.
Thank you
Drew

You are most welcome and it was my honor to visit with you and your family.
Great to hear of the success! Wish I could have been there too... instead there's two less morons at the Delaware beach tonight. The got the "hotel" they were looking for, breakfast included.
