Auto-rx organic engine cleaner and Cool harness 92 w/ pics pg.3
Anyone else use Auto-rx? I wasnt a believer at first coming at $26.00 a bottle. But after trying it out in my 1993 190E 2.6 on a drive from Las Vegas to St George, Utah and then Las Vegas to San Francisco. I am amazed. My mileage went up to 26.7mpg highway and the car feels peppier and I have plenty of power again at passing on the highways. My car felt sluggish the last 2 years and I attributed that to its age. I only have 143K miles on it. The transmission has always had shift shock and shifted pretty rough. Even my rebuilt one was like that. Once again Auto Rx said you can put 6 oz of its metal cleaner in and drive it 1000 miles before draining to clean the tranny. Well within 60 miles of driving my transmission is shifting like a Japanese car. No more hard hits...its smooth as butter. I am truly amazed. My car feels like a new car. Just got to put enough mileage on it so that I can drain the fluids from the cleaning phase. Then comes the rinse phase where the gunk actually gets rinsed out from the engine. Im not there yet. But looking inside my oil filler cap I have a lot of varnish (brown stains) and a little sludge built up over the years. I'm aiming to remove all that with this. With the mileage I have, I will have to probably do two cleaning cycles before all the sludge and varnish is out of the engine. But so far it works.
Now as all 190E 2.6 owners know these little engines tend to run on the hot side by nature of design from the factory. The cars auxiliary fans turn on at 110C, 115C etc depending on when the engine was made to keep the car from overheating. But as we all know that is cutting way too close as 110C = 276F or so which is pretty hot. Living in Vegas my car would not keep the
AC on during traffic jams because the car auto shuts off the AC when the engine temp is too hot. Many a times I have cooked sitting in Vegas traffic when its 120F outside and inside. I did a little research and found this gadget Jim Forgione came up with. It plugs right into the CTS- Coolant Temperature Sensor of the vehicle. The 2.6 engines are right in the middle of the engine block next to the air filter canister. This black plug that plugs directly into the block. In a 2.3 engine it is right next to the thermostat- a blue plug. Well the plug shatters when you pull it off so becareful. The plastic gets brittle from all the years of use in a heat filled environment. Best to use a rag and needle nose pliers. This Coolharness92 has a resistor built in. It looks like a factory plug as it uses that to connect to the CTS. I plugged in and my aux fans now turn on at high speeds when the coolant temp reaches 92C and it also turns on at high speeds when the pressure is built up on the AC compressor. Now my car's AC is ice cold while stuck in 90F traffic and I dont have to pull over to let the car cool down. Havent been able to try 120F yet but will soon. I also flushed the coolant and replaced with MB coolant and water and a bottle of Royal Purple Purple ICE coolant additive availiable from only Kragen's (in the SF bay area) I dont know why Autozone dont carry it even tho Royal Purple says they do. $15.99 a bottle. My cars coolant temp is always at 80C which is normal operating temp. Now using Purple ICE my car temp is below that when I am driving. So it really does work by dropping the temp. I wouldnt say it dropped it 30 degrees but more like 11-15degrees which is a lot already for the 190E. My car has tons more power now since it runs cooler whereas before when the engine was really hot I can feel the power loss from the increased heat as the engine automatically retards the timing on the car to keep from over heating.
The Cool Harness92 I bought from Jim Forgione for $58 shipped. Many have tried it and it works wonders on their Mercedes from I4s to I6s to V6s and V8s. He has a model for each type of engine. Google Cool Harness 92 to find his webpage.
Just thought I d share this tid bit with other 190E owners as it really helped my car out. I ve got more power now and better mileage just from doing these two things while still running on conventional Castrol GTX 20W50 motor oil. The Auto-Rx dissolves the carbon built up over the years around the piston rings and frees them up. It liquefies the carbon deposits and carries it in the motor oil to the oil filter. I use Mann filters, Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filters or K&N Gold oil filters.
