Cool Runs Great / Won't Pass Emissions Test

Well my 89 190E just fasiled its emissions test today, which surprised the hell outta me. It runs so well I was sure it'd breeze thru. Both the Hydrocarbons and the CO levels were too high. What could be the problem?
The spark plugs are new. I ordered today from AutoHausAZ the distributor cap & rotor. Maybe I'll get a bottle of Techroline and run it in the gas. Anyone other ideas?

runs great / failed emission test

Washington state. Hydrocarbons: at cruise, allowable limit 150 ppm, actual 285. Idle, allowable 220 ppm, actual 361. CO at cruise, allowable 1%, actual 7.5% and idle allowable 1.2%, actual 5.37%. OH NO not a catalytic! Those cost a lot of beans. I thought when a cat went bad, it got plugged up & car won't run. So maybe I didn't need to spend $75 on a dist. cap!

Anyone know where to get a good deal on Cat?

It doesn't look like AutoHausAZ carries them!

get and ebay or std universal cat - at worst they will have to rill a hole to put the o2 sensor in there (if it had one to begin with)

most likely its the cat - get that changed, get a new gas cap from like autozone and use some of that guarenteed to pass stuff you add to gasoline. tank up with premium and make sure the engine is hot when you bring it in.

remove any egr blocking things you may have put in there (I had a small screw in my egr valve hose in my old 93 190e )

some tricks include taking off the air filter and over inflating the tires

last option is getting a fake emissions from a shop you who does the stuff - if you know the owner personally for example. (I did that here in Ontario, CDN as the 190e was dying and I did not want to spend $ on it close to the end...)

good luck
