hi, I am new to MB. I have a 1992 190e that i just replaced the head gasket, rotor cap timing chain, rails and plugs. it ran rough when i test drove it, then died and would not restart.
towed it home.
replaced the hydraulic lifters.
now it turns over but will not start.
It has strong spark and will fire with starting fliud , then dies.
does anyone have any idea whats going on?
From what you describe the engine is getting no fuel.
If the car has been sitting for a long time and has done a reasonably high mileage
I would replace the fuel injectors because
a) it is relatively inexpensive
b) they don't last forever
You already know that no fuel flows through them so either
- There's not enough fuel pressure to open the injectors
- the injectors are stuffed
I would not worry too much about idle control etc (so vacuum leaks, EHA, ECU, throttle switch etc are all irrelevant.
You know you have spark but no fuel.
Concentrate on fuel flow.
Do you hear a noise from the fuel pump?
Be very careful to follow proper procedure when disconnecting fuel lines. You might end up incinerating everything!
I can't remember where I read it, but there are filter screen(s) in those gas line(s) that go to the fuel pressure regulator & distributor. Can't remember how many screens there are, maybe only one. Most likely they are clogged & need to be cleaned.
