Duplicate Key

Hi Benz Owners! I am new to the site and just bought a 1992 190E 2.6 with 138,000 miles. My question is that the prevous owner says that there is only 1 key. How do I obtain a duplicate if I lose the 1 key?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Duplicate Key

I'm not convinced that you can obtain a duplicate after you will lose the single key you have - so you better make a duplicate on that key.

RE: Duplicate Key

All you need is your car's registration with the VIN number. Take that and your ID/license to any Mercedes dealer and they'll order you a new key, provided the locks have never been swapped out. Costs about $25

RE: Duplicate Key

A word of advice. I would rather pay the ~$25 to get the key made right from the dealer than have it duplicated at a locksmith, or such. The quality of the dealership's key is by far superior to any locksmiths creation. I have both a duplicate key (came with the car), the original keys, and a new key from the dealership. There really isn't any comparison between the sets.

RE: Duplicate Key

I had the same situation about the key to the car. I called the dealer here in Minneapolis. I was told that I had to bring in the VIN and also proof of ownership. They then would order a key from the factory. The cost was $30.00. I took the key I had to a specialty key shop and they copied it for $25.00 and they did it while I waited.

RE: Duplicate Key

keys from locksmiths are brass. trouble trouble trouble. get steel keys cut to code with vin # at dealer. they are ordered and picked up a couple of days later. the brass keys leave fine brass dust that eventually will murder the lock and leave you stranded with a few less ben franklins in your wallet. steel is king...
