I'm Ethan and new here and need some help please. I've just bought a Automatic 2005 A170 Classic (W169) for my wife and having some problems today.
Bought the car off a careful Christian lady owner yesterday but today I've found 3 messages are showing on the dash panel ABS/BAS/ESP Visit Workshop warnings keeps coming on all the time.
Are there any checks I should make before taking it to a mechanic? As I mentioned, I've changed the break switch, I've also had the battery tested and it's in tip top condition, anything else I should look for? I've also found that I cannot go over 80mph - related to this problem?
Whatever it is, it shouldn't be there!
You really need to have the car diagnosed on STAR by a qualified Mercedes mechanic.
Someone on MBOwners forum (as Sat already suggested) will be able to recommend a local trusted independent garage.
No problem Ethan, always a pleasure to help a fellow Merc driver :wink
Just in case you didn't know - there's an online Owner's Manual for the W169, albeit for the facelift model, so ignore the stuff about your car doing parallel parking for you - ain't gonna happen :grin
Seriously though, there are only a few minor differences (front lights being one of them) between the two, so pretty useful resource:
Sorry Ethan, it's been rather hectic here ...
I did look behind the radiator and didn't see anything, but didn't take a pic.
Will definitely do that tomorrow, my apologies.
Like I said, there should be nothing like what you have there, present.
Mind you, mine is a 2035cc petrol, there might be some extra wiring in a diesel?
Mines a petrol like yours. Really baffled as to what the thing is, especially the way its put together with duck tape and a terminal connector - looks suspicious if you ask me - now, which wire to cut?....the black or...........
Oh, I see - well, than that's what I see in mine, and yours should be the same...
I think the only correct way to deal with it, is to have the car plugged into STAR, run full diagnosis, disconnect whatever this contraption is, run diagnosis again and see what's up - then you will know which ECU they tried to by-pass (just a guess).
Thanks David, got it booked for tomorrow, lets see what I find.
