I took it along to MB, and they said it had been in an accident of some kind. The bootlid was full of filler, and after a lot of phone calls, no-one was admitting responsibility (spoke to previous owner and the garages which had had car). The chap at MB said that there was no way it had been done by a MB approved bodyshop, as the paint was all sorts of thicknesses, and it wouldn't have passed quality checks. I argued that an accident wouldn't cause the panel seal to come away in all the same places, but it was fruitless and I was fighting a losing battle. Was told it would be at least £1500 to sort out, so I cut my losses and traded it in for a £1200 loss.
