Tailgate Buffers - how do I fit them?

So, the old boot lid rubber buffers were ugly, dried out - covered with [persistent] white residue, and had shrunk too, hence no longer did any real buffering ...

Bought a pair of new ones, genuine OE, nice, black and very springly

Now, I got the old ones out, intact (with a plastic trim remover tool), but whatever I tried, I can't get the new ones in - tried greasing the pins, and tried WD40 - nope.

Poped into my local Mercedes, they said the tailgate trim might have to come out, for these to fit  That sounds like at least a half-an-hour job ... not exactly what I had in mind. They'll probably do it for free during the next service, but that's not till October.

Any suggestions, as to how to fit these, are greatly appreciated.
