2000 A160 SEMI-AUTO START PROBLEM- NEED URGENT HELP PLS
Hi,
I'm having trouble with my A160 from monday this week. It started 100% normal in the morning but after a 20km trip I switched it off & when I tried to start it again I could hear the starter motor spinning & making a bit of a weird noise but it was not turning the engine. After taking it to my mechanic & him removing the starter I was told that the starter was damaged beyond repair & had to be replaced, Which we did. But even after replacing the starter it still wont start. The new starter turns the engine, all ignition lights come on when the key is turned, battery seems 100% but the engine still refuses to start. My mechanic disconnected the battery completely before doing the repair so I'm not sure if this would upset the computer in any way. We have since towed it to the agent for a diagnostic but still waiting from yesterday for their report. I was hoping there was some1 out there that would shed some light on what the possible problem could be.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
TIA

The a class has 2 very common failures the starter is one and the ecu is the other. You should always make sure that the mechanic who works on your a class is experienced on these cars because very simple mistakes can cost you dearly. Here is the problem i think you had a starter problem initially....that has now been resolved BUT if the old one was cranked sufficiently or if the battery was not removed and replaced in the correct format ( very important on an a class) then it is quite possible and i would say probable that you have spiked the ecu with a surge and it now needs replacing. mercedes will quote you a price that would make you ill for a new ecu £1300.00 pounds plus minus. Dont sweat contact me if ecu is diagnosed and i will help you get it sorted at a fraction of the cost. regards Gerold
After having the starter replaced & the car still not starting up I decided to let the agents have a look at it. Diagnostic picked up that the L5 sensor was damaged aswell. Car started fine after it was replaced but again we picked up another fault... It was making a very loud rattling noise when on idle so after some advice from a few friends & a hectic quote from the agents for labour just to tel me what was causing the noise I had it towed to The Gearbox People. It turns out that my Flex Plate was cracked & was causing the racket. It has since been replaced & all is well with that side of the problem.
However I have noticed that my fan is running continuiously when the engine is on & after taking it back to the agents for a second diagnostic & reset the "Coolant level warning light" has gone off but fan still stays on.
Another warning light that has been on from before I had the starting problem is the
"Engine Diagnostic Malfunction Indicator Lamp" Which stays on from the time the car is started & starts Blinking after driving around for a while.
Nothing comes up on the diagnostic report with regard to this warning light & I was told by the agents that this is the first time that they have seen this warning light blink & are not sure what the problem could be.
If anyone can shed some light on either of these two problems I will be very greatful.
