my wife's A160 S/A (2002) has just died as she was driving along. She said there was a hissing sound, rather like air escaping, then the car came to a halt. On trying to restart the car, the starter just sounds like it is spinning, but not engaging the engine. my first thought was a broken cambelt, but have since found out that it does not have one. There were no warning signs beforehand, and it has only done 55,000 miles.
Any suggestions to what may be the cause?
It has a poly V belt that drives essential services like water pump, air con etc, and it has a timing chain I hope it's not that that's caused the failure or it's goodbye engine. unless you are very lucky indeed.
Is there any loss of fluids, oil , coolant?
did you wife see any warning lights on the instrument cluster before the car stopped?
if your not sure where the items are check my site out it may well help. Albert Rowe, Lofty's homepage.index.html
She says there were no warning lights before the car stopped, and there is no loss of fluids. Thanks to the information on your page, I have been able to check The 'v' belt, and that is is good condition. When I try to start it, I can see that the 'v' belt is turning, but not the engine. does this mean he chain has broken? how can I check The chain?
It does sound like it I have never encountered this before luckily I have never had a chain break on a car .
the chain does connect between the crank shaft and the cam shaft so it could well be the problem the starter turns the crank and the main pulley drive for the poly V belt is attached to that so its logical.
However don't turn the engine over further .
The next thing really is to investigate the problem turning the engine over in that condition May worsen the damage.
The engine will need to be removed and the timing chain checked, then go from there,
But don't go entirly on what I have said get a second opinion. there may be a better and less costly explanation.
Either way please keep us informed we are interested and hope the damage is as little as possable.
