Red face Odd starting problem.

HI,

I recently purchased an A140 on a 2001 plate. The car itself is in good condition but I have a really odd starting problem.

You can unlock the car ok, get in, insert the key and turn it to position one at which point the SRS light comes on which I believe is correct. The odd bit is when you turn the key to position 2. Sometimes all of the warning lights come on as they're soposed to do and the car will start fine when you turn the key to position 3. Other times you don't get any of the warning lights and the car will not start.

When the problem does happen I can be sat there turning the key 20 or 30 times all the way to the off position 0 and then back to the position 2 without getting any of the lights then suddenly the next time it will work.

I have changed the batteries in the key fob and when the car does start the starter is turning over with plenty of power so I do not believe it is a battery problem.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me with this or even some pointers in how to fault find the problem. It is almost like the ignition switch isn't working properly, or maybe a rellay.

Thanks.

My money in this case would be on the ignition switch, try moving the key up down etc see if it makes contact and brings up the lights. remember bunches of keys on the same key ring as you ingintion key will cause undue wear on the lock and switch.
see my page.6.
