Repair-kit or techincal chart for the power steering pump
Hi!
I'm having a problem with the power steering pump. I've been searching these forums and come up with a few others having the same problem.
The pump is running continuously even when the engine is off. So my guess is that there is a switch internally that is jammed and won't turn off the pump when it loose power.
As the pump is expencive and is in fact working perfectly, except for not turning off when it should, I'm looking for a repair-kit or a technical chart so I can fix it myself.
I have an education in electronics so it shouldn't be difficult. I could open it without the chart and go in blind, but I won't risk damaging the pump and be without my car for what could be a long time.
Hope anyone can help me with a quick download for the techincal charts so I can get my A160 up and running. As of now I have to remove the fuse connected to the power steering pump not to drain the battery over night.
If you go to my site you will find information on the pump . The continious running problem is in fact quite common .
Also the number of electrical components in this units must number in the hundreds .
How or why it needs so may is any bodies guess.
I have only heard of one owner overcoming this problem and that was by fitteg two resistors but sorry i do not have the details of the to hand.
A search of the baby-benz.com forums search may bring it back to life.
The last I heard, his pump was still running
As far as repairs are concerned BBA reman (UK) will repair the pump for £140 less 15% if you mention my site when placing you order or simply click on the psp on that page. http://www.aclassinfo.co.uk/mypage.49,htm
Thanks lofty! You really helped me out there. After reading what you say about the pump and looking at the pictures, I think that it will be no problem for me to fix the pump. The circuit board looks easy enough to look for faults.
I will get back to you when, and if, I find out what the problem is so you can add it to your site.
I hope I get time to fix this on soon as the steering is quite hard without the pump...
Rather you than me I'd sooner have a go at a good fire! Everbody to their own as they say ,
Yes would appreciate you getting back as many owners have suffered this in the past with the result that they have to fit a reconditioned or in some cases when dealing with MB a new pump £380+ plus i suspect fitting + fluid + vat + inconvenience. I have one owner shipping a replacement out from the UK to NZ costly but apparently still cheaper than buying one in NZ.
