I bought a 2000 a170 a week ago and it had fitted an after market jvc cd player that did`nt work properly.
everything else was fine.
whilst waiting for the insurance paperwork to come through i put it on my parents drive,
in the week i set about changing the stereo, i was a mechanic of 10 years and i have alot of experience in ice too.
when i removed the jvc it was a mess to say the least wires and block taped in everywhere.
now with hands up. what i did was do what would have been professional in my day, i stripped the loom back to standard wires and wired in the new stereo.
found my earth and posatives ect speaker wires.
when i had finished fitting the unit i had alot of wires left over
in the process the battery whent flat!
so i rang mercedes as i had herd that you cannot jump the A class i was advised to trickle charge the battery over night off the car.
i did this and the battery would`nt hold any more than 7 volts so i bought a replacment battery.
after reconnecting when i tried to start the car i got the start error on the dash.
i have seen mean reasons for this BUT
i have alot of wires behind the stereo that are not connected to anything, and i can`t find out what they do.
does anyone have a wiring diagram for one of these or a knowledge photo of the rear of the stereo.
i have spent all day on the phone with several people and there wire colours don`t match up with what i have
i have
pink&brown/pink & white
green&brown/brown
brown&white/pink & white
brown&red/brown & black
which i have set as speakers
lareg gauge brown (earth)
pink and blue (battery constant live)
large gauge blue and white (??? tele mute???)
small gauge blue&white ???
small gauge green&black (has ignition live)
large gauge pink&white (has ignition live)
small gauge pink
if anyone could shed anylight i would be so appreciative.
Hi Tony
I have a 2001 A170 and have start error fault on it. I too changed my battery and it was fine up until that point so i would have a guess that it is linked more to the battery change than your radio wiring. I have had mine in the dealers and it has CAN communication fault codes whch are different to yours but typically the fault went away when they had it. All the ignition lights come on but when the key is turned Start Error comes on and there is no cranking of the engine. Im still trying to fix this and believe it might be something to do with voltage spikes that have caused the fault with the electronics. If i disconnect the battery it sometimes goes away. If i find a solution ill let you know !!
sorry to be honest forgot i`d posted here i hope this helps after weeks and weeks of playing to no joy merc were pants
i snuck in the back door and found that the diag guy was actually a cousin of a friend he came round with his own merc laptop (star) reset the ecu and its been fine ever since
hth tony they don`t inspec this on the short test they do i was most frustrated but happy now!
