My wife drives a 2002 160 CDI A Class and for some reason her fan belt has broken three times in the last year. We have had the alternator checked, changed all the rollers and tensioner but the belt just got damaged again. Any thoughts or experiences out there?
Well it's not a fan belt but I know what you mean it's the poly V belt runs water pump air con alternater etc.
One problem that can cause this multiple belt fraying and breakage is where the main drive pulley wheel shed the outer vulcanised rubber casing.
best seen on my my site Bert Rowe's-A-class info. Poly 'V' Belt, Crankshaft pulley wheel problems.
And it's not easily spotted so take a look.
Great stuff Lofty, will be inspecting the complete adjuster unit after the holidays. Currently the vehicle is parked since we broke two more belts since my last posting. Will keep you posted.
If you are fitting these belts yourself make sure they follow the correct path, it's not straight forward when you get under the car and remove the old belt. follow the wrong path the belt will shread. 2 belts, 1 for air con 1 for non aircon both are different layouts.

Lofty it all worked out well and my wife is back on the road. Thanks for your valuable input.
