Hi please can anyone help me I have a mercedes A160 Avantgarde Auto 1999 which was working fine the all of the sudden a 'F' showed on the display and it only drove as if it was in 1st gear doing 15mph.
I have had a diagnostic reprt done at merc aid and they said I will need a whole new gear box which would cost £2500, has anyone got any ideas as to what the problem is & if i 'really' need to replace the gearbox
What error codes do you have listed in diagnostic report? I have the original service software for mercedes, so based on the error codes, I can tell you what Mercedes recomends to be done.
I had almost the same problem: on the highway, at 70 mph,5th gear, the car lost traction, the display showed "F". Pulled over, turn off the engine , turned back on, and everything was ok. The ecu scan discovered P1893 error code, meaning " pressure too high at regulating valve or solenoid valve 1/4 or 3". The gearbox somehow doesn't know in what gear sould go. In the worst case I shoult replace the solenoid valves, not to replace entire gearbox. Anyway, before do anything to the gearbox, check the oil, the filter, perform a reset by removing the + from the battery car for at list 5 min. See what happens.
Sorry to hear you man.I had the identical problem with my 2000 A160 Avant Garde and it cost me a packet for a complete gear box overhaul.Bought the car new and serviced by MB and only 77000 Klms before it needed this costly repair job.MB not interested, they sent it to a transmission repair shop and told me to deal diect with them.Have been an MB owner for more than 30 years and once the three MB s we have are done I will be looking elsewhere.I dont need to be reamed to have the dubious pleasure of driving behind the tri-star.Even the Koreans are turning out more reliable vehicles than the so called superior German factories.
We had the same problem with our A190 (a 1998 model).
The local MB dealer first changed the slider "box" inside the gearbox, costing more than $2900. This, however did nothing to help.
Next they changed the transmission's control box for $600 and this *seems* to have helped (not 100% sure yet as the problem might take a week to arise).
Fingers crossed, on both the car working and our battle to get that 2900 back from the dealer. (If any Finns are reading this, avoid Veho at all costs and take your merc to some other place to get fixed - they obviously have no professionals at all working for them!).
A160 99 semi-auto has "F" on display. OBD produced three error codes
P0600
P1868
P1886
After clearing codes, "F" goes away. You can see 1st, 2nd , 3rd (basically all the gears) but only when car is stationary. As soon as you try to drive it, it goes back into limp mode and the big fat "F" comes right back on. I understand its something to do with the serial communication link malfunction, solenoid valves and pressure or something like that (not really good when it comes to fixing cars) can anyone please help me on what needs to be done. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
