A140 steering play

Hi everyone. This is my first time on here, great site, keep up the good work!
I have a 09/2004 A140 auto with 35k miles, just had my car serviced and a fault has been identified.
The steering makes a slight but noticeable knocking sound. It can be heard with the engine off, by just rocking the steering very gently. They've identified the problem as the interior UJ. The part number needed is A168 460 2216 and I've been quoted £391 + vat to have it done privately by the MB mechanic. Is this a possible DIY job? Alternatively, although it's out of warranty, is there any mileage is contacting MB for any goodwill assistance?

In short No, MB will admit to nothing and recalls on this ongoing steering problem are out of the question.
Show me an A class that does not have this slight click/nock on the steering, just make sure the steering column parts are fully lubricated, don't ask MB because they have never heard of grease or lubrication on these componts, Go to my page 49 and who knows like many other owners you may well find that all your column want's is a bit of lubrication in the right places.
Bert Rowe's-A-class information.mypage.49.htm costs nothing and like others it could save you a tidy sum, Don't bother asking MB if they approve of course they won't because you won't want there spare parts if it cures the problem!
