Prevention is better than cure Central locking system.
Hi all,
Recently found out that you can prevent costly repairs to the central locking system in a very easy way.
Do this test first and convince yourself :
With the car doors locked ( with auto-locking enabled or locked with the remote) and you sitting inside the car, pull on the inside door handle lightly. Feel the tension on the system and make a mental note of the pressure required to unlock the door. Now use the electric switch ( on the dashboard) to electrically unlock the doors, and feel the tension now required to open the door. Much less!
So you ask what the issue is. Well, inside the door is a thin cable system running over small pulley system. The continuous use of the manual release cable system will cause the cable, and or pulley system to fail.
By using the electric release on the dash you will electrically release the lock system and unload the cable (Backup) release system. So remember push the button dont just pull the handle. Replacement of this cable/pulley system will set you back a lot of money!!
Yup, I've tried this too and you're absolutely right. Thanks for sharing this tip.
Now I actually get mad when someone else in the car just pulls the handle and opens the door (which is what I used to do) instead of pressing the unlock button on the dash first
Yes I also find it works, great stuff anything to save pulling the doors apart. I have just helped a fellow owner to replace a lock on a rear door and it's a nightmare, not because of the technical knowledge required but because of access and the hazard of the lethally sharp door shell, you want a suit of armour on when placing you hands and arm inside the door to remove and fit the new lock. What a pity MB don't inform owners of features such as this, or would it cut down on their after sales income due to fewer repairs?
Well done I will include your discovery on my site then we can all gain from it.

Slightly different to the issue raised above, which is a really good suggestion, but please help if you can on the following:
The auto-lock feature, as in drive-off auto-lock, has quit working on a friend's W168 - Anyone else experience this? And anyone know a cheap remedy?
Thanks.

The security locking is an optional feature, if they look in their handbook or on my site it will explain how to change it back.
basically from what i can recall you press and hold the switch below the hazard triangle you will hear one or two bleeps one position indicates security on, the other off, but I can't remember which . so try it out .
