Hi folks, I'm a newbie so be gentle with me!
My wife's A Class 160 keeps stalling when she turns on the ignition, drives up to junctions or slips the gears into neutral and basically takes her foot off the accelerator.
I've had the car checked for any faults by an auto electrician friend but none are coming up on his computer.
It's as if the car idles too lowly and the engine struggles to keep going - it then dies and the BAS/ESP and battery light come on, very quickly followed by a whole load of other lights next to them. It's a bit like mission control at Cape Canaveral for fleeting second...
I've checked the battery, topped up with fluid etc and the charge is spot on.
My fear is it's this Air Mass thingy I keep reading about and which seems to cost a leg!
But I would've thought if it was the Air Mass whotzit then the fault would've come up as a fault code when my auto leccy pal checked things over?
Could it be anything else?
Any thoughts much appreciated. My wife loves her little A Class and she's struggling to come to terms with the fact it's sick - and it could be terminal!!
Fortunately, I have a 21-year-old V8 12-seater Land Rover on LPG with no sensors that just requires a screw driver and a half pound hammer to solve most problems.
Be great to hear people's thoughts..
Cheers Alan
It dies at about 700rpm. It used to sit at about 1000rpm.
So how do I go about upping or setting the rpm so that it's higher?
If there's a secret screw or button that I press then please tell me about it!!!! Am I being dumb.
The car doesn't appear to have a good old-fashioned accelerator cable but seems to work off a resistor or electronic gizmo at the accelerator pedal.
Cheers Al
Alan - sorry, this sounds very much like the problem I had with my 98 A160. It slightly dropped revs randomly when in idle for a few months and then started stalling completely. Mass flow air meter I'm afraid. A snip at around £900 from my dealer (!). Time to bite the bullet I'm afraid.
