Recently picked up a problem with the fuel guage on my 2001 (w168) model A160 auto. The guage does not go to full anymore. Even with the tank filled to the neck it will only indicate approx 80% full. The South African dealers say this is because the guage was damaged by overfilling. Cost in South Africa to replace is 300-400 Euro. Too much for me... Anyone out there with info or advise. I have reasonable electronic experience...Can it be done as DIY??
Thanx Affreuxbill for the info - I had a look and it looks ilke a easy job to rectify this problem. I will work with the instrustions and report my success / other problems here.
Amazing that such a small (common) problem has not been resolved by the manufacturer! The dealer in my area reported regular problems with overfilling. You should only fuel until auto shutoff on the fuel pump and no more. Suppose the dealers need to get rich from somone/something.
I think it is more likely that you never fill up the tank so the floater in the tank never has a chance to work all the way, up or down.
Try fill it up few times, let the floater loosen up. If still not working, may be a new floater is needed.
When I am half full, I have it filled.
Hi Pigtail,
Thanx for your response - the car is kept full. I understand your thinking and agree with your reasoning. Full tanks also prevent condensation and thus water contamination and rust! Very few people think about it in that way.
