semi automatic gear problem help

Got an A class semi automatic 1999 S reg Avantagrade(A160)
ive been told that the gear thing needs to be changed and it'll cost me £1500.00 [:(!]
basically i dont hav a clutch but i have 2 change the gears as wen required just like driving a manual car, it has a gear 5 speed box.
wot i need 2 know is can i get it done cheaper & what r the parts called coz i might be able 2 buy it from ebay!!!
Also i am finding the 1st gear power is rubbish is that coz of the gears????wot can i do.. [B)]

1 more thing, on a hill it tends to roll backwards but in a fully automatic car it does not move an inch. Is this suppossed 2 happen

My A140 mercedes benz 02 registration also has problems with the gear and I also have been told that it will costs about £1500 to fix. It took about 7 visits to the mercedes benz garage for the fault to be detected. I am very frustrated and just cant wait to get rid of the car. is this probl;em common to the semi automatic transmission perhaps. I would love to hear from any other owners who have experienced a similar problem.
