Please can someone help. We have a Merc A class which has developed a strange cross between a whistle and whirling sound - almost sounding like a tunning fork. This starts for a few seconds before you even start the engine. It then continues whilst driving, unless you are turning or accelerating. If you have been driving for a while, and stop the engine, when you set of again this usually stops.
Above your head and within the interior light you have a wee fan check to see if it's that it's no bigger than a mans thumb. If it is that and you can stand the noise then don't worry about it it sample the air in the car for the air conditioning.

Ps if you go to my site there is even a photo of it

Thanks for the response, however, Im not sure this could be that fan, as sometimes the noise begins even before you have started the engine. I have had a look and tried switching the air con off and on but it haas made no difference, and the noise doesn't really sound to be coming from there, though I am unsure where it is actually coming from.
If you have any other ideas I would be very grateful.[?]
I remember having the same problem, and as Lofty states, I came from the light unit in the roof.
And also as you mention the noise was there even before turning the engine on.
Best way to check was (if I remember correctly) if you are in the car, wait until everything turns quiet (no contact or anything) and then just press the clock/outside temperature button (left of the steering wheel) and suddenly the noise came back on (or for a couple of seconds or for as long the data was in the little display).
If it is that noise that is bothering you, I think my mb dealer said it was the little fan upthere or may be the little lamp in there. At least they fixed it and I was nevered bothered again .
you will get the noise before you start the engine , it will start the moment you turn the keys to position 2 lofty put a feather against the wee grill in the interior light fitting the feather will drop when you turn the ignition off! Better still cure the noise drop the light fitting on it's cable, remember the alarm module is there as well so don't remove it completely, details on my site, then put the smallest amount of oil on the impellor spindle then brush the collected dust of the impellor vanes with an artists soft paint, that will help reduce the noise
