Combined Air Mass Meter and ECU

I have an A160 Elegance Automatic Registed in 1999 and experiencing the same problems as yourself with the Air Mass Sensor and have booked the car into a Mercedes for a replacement which is going to cost £600+ Any Advice you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks & Regards Brian Ricketts

Cleaning the airmass with a degreaser or WD40 will temporarily solve the problem, the sensor of the airmass for this kind of fuel system is hot film, meaning the film is heated up and air is pass thru the film creating a different resistance for the electric current.

I agree that you should consult your dealer and ask for some sort of goodwill for the damaged engine control unit with built in airmass sensor. and after they replace this thry to make suer you replace the airfilter regularly since dust will scratch the film and will damage it very quickly again.

do u have to take the unit out ? how do u clean it?

bought my A140 Y plate currently on 42k miles about 2 yrs ago and have suddenly got starting problems been quoted 600pounds plus to be fixed at MB authorised garage if this is a common fault will they still cover me? even though i bought it privatly???

mine hasnt gone completly dead it does start after trying over n over again it has good days where it starts quick n some days it takes forever dont fancy spending the money as i want to sell it on any ideas to fix it temporarily ????

For 'A' Class owners with ECU/MAFS sensor problems please see my page 38 for discounted repaire 10% or 15% discount depending on which company you choose to use both have a good reputation and both have the same unconditional warrantee BBA Reman are however more costly for the same repair.
New MB units are running at about £1300 fitted so the repair at £250 & £300 prior to discount as one of my readers is worth considering However you must mention my site to get the discount. Bert Rowe's-A-class information.mypage.38.htm

ok, this is probably not to be recommended, but i took mine apart with a view to cleaning the sensors.... Problem was i broke one of them (they are like tiny sheets of glass) Oh bu99er i thought
anyway, put it all back together again, and it has run like a dream ever since... that was about a year ago

My guess is, having some idea how these systems work, is that the default state of the unit with a missing (broken) sensor, results in the car running more reliably than id does with a dirty or defective sensor???
