I have 2011 ML350 Bluetec.
The tailgate was worhing OK till last week.
After recent trip it is not closing down anymore.
I can still open it using remote, switch inside or activating by pulling the handle.
In short - opens OK.
When trying to close using the button (remote, inside or tailgate), there is a mechanical noise, it goes down a bit (10cm), gets quiet for 5 seconds, makes short noise.... and that's it.
I can push it down, and it locks OK.
Any suggestions?
Could it be the hydraulic pump?
Where is it?
Googla search is not Bluetec specific. It said that it is located by spare wheel, so I checked in my wife's Prius since Bluetec does not have spare...;-)
Arek,
The rear SAM is located in the area below the right rear tail light. Open the panel and you will see the rear fuse/relay panel. At the bottom of that space will likely be a bunch of water.
In the space occupied by the AdBlue tank is what 43sqd is referring to. There will likely be water in and around there. Not practical to remove the AdBlue tank so clean and dry that area.
Presuming you find water, you should also look behind the left rear tail light though there's no exciting electronic modules there.
Skippy
Here is the update.
I went to Merc dealer. After checking with "head mechanic" I found that it is not normally a problem with 2011 ML350 and he suggests diagnostics to determine the problem. The culprit: SAM. I also talked to the parts dude and found that they have them in stock ($44 each). He suggested that I spray water on them and monitor from inside.
So, I took the pressure washer to it. Locked wife with flashlight inside (after removing inside panels on both sides). No leaks.
I read on the net that it could be SAM or the hydraulic pump.
In case of SAM it would require replacement.
If it is the pump, it may need the oil.
WHERE IS THE PUMP?
Is it where the spare wheel should be? Same place where the AdBlue tank is?
I have opened the spare wheel/AdBlue compartment today.
First picture shows general look of it. I have highlighted the pump in yellow and another electronic device in red. Is that SAM or AdBlue heater?
Second picture shows close up of the pump.
Fourth shows the oil level. When upside down, the see through compartment is full (no need to add any oil).
Third picture shows a compartment in the back (by rear passenger side light) with fuses and one electronic device. Is that the elusive SAM?
So, since there is enough oil in the pump, what's the next step of troubleshooting?
The tailgate opens every time and closes some time. That's using the button on the tail gate or remote.
That's a plus that it wasn't sitting in water. Before I replaced my right tail light gasket I would frequently find a pool of water where that would install.
The module in red I do not know what it is. Is there a part number on it? It should look like xxx xxx xx xx.
