my 2008 ml320 tailgate was always erratic, it always closed fine from any switch/key etc but opening it would stick sometimes
i did notice if i washed it or we got some rain and then it sat for a few days it would stick
it seemed like the rubber liner was stuck to the metal
anyway i replaced the shocks and the door handle latch that i am pretty sure is an superceded part , mechanic spent some time adjusting it and it worked awesome, did not mess up once for 3-4 months
and when this truck is driven it is for work and opened several times a day
then i washed it the other day and it sat for 4-5 days, went to open the tailgate and it was totally stuck
was obvious the rubber was stuck to the metal, had to physically pull it out a few inches - it took a good bit of pressure, then it opened fine and is fine now
but i have come to the conclusion this was a lot of my problem and now will often put some armour all, gummi pflege or something like that on it
hope this helps someone else, would think it would be even more of an issue in wetter climates than mine...
