Fan after engine is off?

2011 ML350 After I shut off engine and return to garage a few minutes later, I hear a fan under hood running. If I open passenger door, fan stops.Does not happen all the time.Seems to happen after running A/C .Any ideas?

same issue here. Seems like this topic has come up before but now I can't recall any of the comments.

This is just a guess, but if it happens after using the A/C I would surmise that perhaps there is an auxiliary fan that runs in order to prevent water build-up in the condenser, which is what provides an environment for the growth of bacteria, leading to that horrible 'sock' smell you sometimes get.

Later: Not a bad guess! See DougY's comment below.

There is the REST feature which will keep veh interior warm after the veh is shut off. YOU activate it by hitting AC/rest button and it blows warm air until engine temp drops or battery gets low (safety part)

I thought it was malfunctioning because I had NOT turned it on but heard the fan running in garage.

When I queried the dealer, they explained there was a feature to run fan to clear condensation from the system.

It wasn't mentioned in book so I had no idea.
