What EXACTLY is 4-matic ?

Is 4-matic a full time 4 wheel drive system, meaning the car is always powered by 4 wheels all the time no matter what the driving conditions are ?
Or is it 2WD until it senses slipping, and only then do the 2 front wheels get engaged and only then is the car powered by 4 wheels?
Can someone give me a definitive answer on this pls.
I have hear differing answers on this.
Thanks.

My understanding is that its an all wheel drive system that is active all the time.

Thanks for clarification
ML 4-matic is full time.
I wonder how much better mpg you get with a 2WD ML vs 4WD?
More then 10% improvement?

In the US it's an option. In fact it's an up charged option.

It's standard equipment on the BlueTEC and optional on the lesser equipped gas engined models.

When I ordered my '07 ML CDI I remember being able to order 2WD or 4WD, but when I went on to MBUSA site yesterday I could not find that option listed for new ML's.
Is 2WD still available in the 2010 ML ?
Why would you need 4WD in Fla or So Cal ?

Because I drive to the North Carolina Mountains where we have a timeshare cabin way up in the deep snow and woods country. The ML gets back there like nothing. Even better than the huge 4x4 Ford F250 we had!! Way better!

You can still get all models in either 4matic or 2wd. I beleive alot of the dealers stock the 2wds to show the lowest price in thier ads.
