Manual Shift Paddles '07 CDI

Reading through the manual, I see what the shift paddles are supposed to do, and assume that you can't accidently downshift into D-1 at 60MPH, but don't see any cautions at all about using them. There doesn't appear to be any way to use them for a downshift one step at a time. When stopped, if I hit the left side, the transmission goes straight to D-1, then moves up with subsequent taps on the right side through the gears to D. I need to make a turn near the middle of a very steep hill near the house, and have always used the transmission along with the brakes to slow the car. Is there some way to do this - maybe I'm missing something obvious? Pretty easy with the console mounted shifter on the C320 wagon, with one gear at a time shifts by moving the lever to the right or left

Not wanting to try it out, exactly what would happen if someone accidently hit the left button while at highway speeds?

Thanks!

The computer wont let it shift into a gear that will over rev the engine .

Are you sure you're not holding it down, when it should be a quick flick of the paddle/switch?

Vernl is correct. The system won't let you downshift into a gear that is unsafe for the engine.
