Brake Lamp Error - Substitute Bulb On

I have a '06 ML350. Just got it back from the dealer for some other work when it has started displaying a new error.

The error cycling through says "Brake Lamp - left substitute bulb on" then "Brake Lamp - right substitute bulb on".

On researching the error, apparently when the substitution is done, it's done to both bulbs, which makes sense since both bulbs going out simultaneously sounds unlikely.

Are the bulbs end-user replaceable? If so - can someone help with directions on how to access/open the tail light assembly?

thanks.

Unfortunately this is a common problem with the ML and other Benz's too. Talk to your dealer service about this. As long as your brake lights are still functioning (you should check), you can wait unit your next service. My 06 had this problem and a brake light assembly was replaced and several bulbs.

Thanks MB-SV.

Is that brake light assembly replacement considered warranty work or out of warranty?

Definitely a known warranty issue.

You don't happen to live in Toronto, Canada like me, do you? Today I saw an ML350 and its rear fog was being used as the brake light. I guess his car was using substitutes like yours...

Not likely, when in "substitute" mode, brake lights on both right and left sides work in a legal and proper fashion.

When was your 08 ML delivered? I will not be impressed either if that happens to me (fortunately, mine is fine). That should be covered by the 1 year bumper to bumper warranty but if you can change it yourself quickly, probably you didn't bother to go to the dealership.

Maybe the Chinese bulbs given out in the Mercedes parts department will last longer.
