I am leasing a 2003 C240 4Matic. I got a good deal, and for less than CAN$3,000, I took the MB three-year extended warranty. In the folder containing all my lease docs, there was a package that explained to me that the first two years were bumper-to-bumper and that the third was powertrain-only. Within these sheets, it outlines everything that is covered and specifically states that anything that is not mentionned is not covered. So far the warranty has almost paid for itself.

Not surprised, the early C240's are some of the worst Mercedes in the history of the company from a reliability standpoint. I also had a 01 C240 that was a total piece of crap.

I would take any of the three: ML, X5 or Q7. In europe I would prefer the BMW because of the driving dynamics and great diesel engines. If you don't have the BMW diesel over there in U.S. go for the ML320 CDI. It offers a greater ride comfort than others (especially with airmatic) at the expense of driving pleasure, if you ever care of course. Foot space in the back is marginally worse in the ML and the cargo area is about the same with X5. If you look for generous space Q7 should be the first choice, but the looks are gone badly in order to create that space. That train-like stance takes away all the sportiness IMHO.
By the way I heard that BMW is about to introduce the great 3.0L twin-turbo charged R6 diesel in U.S. although it will be a bit weaker than the European version to meet emission regulations. I wouldn't miss that piece..
