driving up a hill today, i punch the accelerator and the ML barely climbs the hill!!!
my wife said yesterday she tried to pass a slow moving toyota prius... she was so embarrassed she couldn't make the pass, so she pretended that it was intentional to conserve fuel
the ML use to jackrabbit when u hit the accelertor, now it moves like a steady turtle... i told the dealer of a funny noise coming from the engine [like a whriling humm], after looking into it, he said it was one of the pulleys and had that replaced last week, but it still makes that low pitched humm at speeds above 40mph [almost like tire noise, but it wasn't the tires, since i rotated them and it's still there]
About a year ago, I had my '07 ML CDI go into "Limp Home Mode" where you get very weak acceleration, and maybe a shift up to third gear. You should also be seeing the "check engine light".
The dealer was able to fix by replacing the fuel pressure sensor, which was intermittently indicating a high fuel pressure.
If you switch off for about 10 or so seconds and restart, it might go back to regular mode.
And yes, when running right, this thing will launch hard.

I wonder if it could be a bad MAF sensor? A family member just had this issue with an S-Class. The acceleration was a bit lacking at time, despite the fact that there was no Check Engine Light. The dealer ran a few tests (actually they ran it 3 times!) on the MAF sensor voltage, and found that on the 3rd time, the sensor voltage reading was erroneous.
After changing this, the car is back to its normal and expected engine power.
