Any time you change your springs or shocks or both (preferable) you have two choices. The choice I hear most people want is improved handling maybe lower ride height without sacrificing ride comfort, a hard combo to meet. Second choice (mine) maximum lowering, stiffer/tighter feeling (no floaty feel).
Our choice's for shocks and springs are very limited compared to other models and makes of car's/suv's. I have used Eibach on other cars I own and had good results with them, so I went with them over Brabus (pricey) and had not heard of anyone using H&R springs yet. I don't think the "sport" line of Eibachs are softer than stock. I don't know the stock lb rate for our ML's springs so I can't be sure.
I would like to hear more on shock choices for our ML's as that could get rid of my "clunk" which happens 1 or 2 times a week.
I agree, retaining a good ride with lowered springs is tough to achieve. But Eibach makes this claim that it cannot deliver on frequently. A matching shock would probably improve the situation. I don't think the Eibachs are softer than stock, but they are soft when you consider they are shorter and have less suspension travel than stock.
The clunking has nothing to do with the stock shocks. It's probably related to the shorter spring rattling around in a space that it wasn't designed for, I had the same symptom on a Honda Accord (rear) years ago.
