I have a question about price... when's usually the best time to buy a car?
- I've heard end of month when dealers need sale figures, they'll usually be more willing to give the most price cuts.
- I've also heard first year of major change, i.e. new generation or facelift, but i've also heard right before major change, i.e. right now to buy 2008 models.
- I've also heard you should buy, for example, last years model when there's no major changes, i.e. buy a 2007 model right before 2008 models comes out. But I've also heard the other way, i.e. buy a 2008 model when it first comes out...
don't know if there's a best time to buy car where you will have the best value.
also, I'm like the ML alot, but I'm still hoping in near future, ML will come with 3rd row seat, do you think that's a possibility (W163 was like that). I know people keep saying ML doesn't have enough space in the back or W163's 3rd row seat is very tight, but I've sat in the W163 3rd row for 1-2 hours trip and I actually find it pretty comfortable. And please don't tell me to go to GL or R, I hate (HATE) both cars/trucks, GL is too big and long and looked ugly and boxy, while the R looks like a one of those funeral cars.
There's no reason for me to buy an expensive mid size SUV which only sits 5. I mind as well go for C or some thing else...
Thanks a lot...
Thanks everyone for their input... but we might have side tracked a bit...
The discussion about 3rd row seat probably will go no where (unless we have MB designer/insider in this forum too)... MB will be the one making the final decision... I'm just hoping they'll consider that...
But anyways, the main question was when's the best time to buy a new ML? Thanks...
Hi AZ Benz,
I have heard from my Benz dealer that they "used" to take brand new vehicles out for a test drive themselves and then would clock the speedos back to 'normal'. Is this practive normal?
Also when a brand new car that has been ordered, do you guys delay delivery and leave it around the showrroom for show and tell in the hope that someone will buy another one with rare upgrades or specs?
How long does it take to clean up a brand new car like detailing etc, before its ready for delivery?
Ummm...that practice would be illegal, besides, now the odometers are digital. We try to keep them under 100 miles, but at times they exceed that.
Funny story, I bought a Honda Accord once in '92 and was amazed to watch the odometer spin back to zero on it's own at 100 miles. As for delaying delivery, it is not in our best interest to delay anything, so that would seem a bit contrived.
As for detailing, it usually takes about an hour or two to detail the vehicle from new. They get shipped wrapped in plastic, with all kinds of packing material in the interior which gets meticulously removed. Those guys work hard, and deliver clean vehicles without a hitch everyday.

ok, now in my opinion you are not adding anything useful to this board. most of what you said is common sense or you have been giving wrong facts ie magensium wheels. you should have just came out and said, i'm a salesperson with x dealership and if anyone wants to buy a new or used car, please let me know.
the lastest is the issue with the odometers. just because they are digital does not mean they are tamper and fool proof to modifying. if anything being digital makes them easier to change. take for example the 2000 + audi's odometers. audi was having a lot of problems with missing and fading pixels on their center display. so they were replacing instrument clusters often. all they do is hook it up to the computer and input the mileage that was on the last cluster. now, the same can be said of the odometers in mercedes as most of the instrument clusters were made by vdo.
oh, and by the way... pet peeve of mine is people calling the car wash people at mercedes "detailers"
let me tell you, 99.99% of the people at dealerships don't know anything about detailing and don't do it correctly. the detailing guys on the forums know more than them. all they do is wash and wax a car. they don't ever do clay bar, don't do paint correction, swirl removal, etc.

OK vinceching, PM sent. For the record: I didn't say anything wrong about magnesium wheels when I said I had never seen any for SUVs. Go back and read the post.

lol, sorry but you really need to read up on your wheel materials. you will never see magnesium wheels for a suv.
magnesium wheels are not the strongest wheels and are actually soft. only reason race cars use them is they are extremely light and they only use them in short periods before swapping out.
cast wheels are just as durable as forged aluminum and the only reason people go with forged is the slight weight savings, and the ability to fix bent rims easier.
above was what i posted on the gl forums in response to your's. imho you were implying that the only way it makes sense to go with larger rims is if they were magnesium rims...
"I don't ever recommend them, unless they're magnesium ultralight custom wheels...and I haven't seen any for SUVs"
did i read that wrong? i don't think so. i've come across people just like you who like to talk and write about things like "magnesium" which the normal consumer doesn't know about. all in an effort to sound like you know what you are talking about.. but the truth is... you lose credibility by doing that.
again, this post imho is a joke. all these questions can be answered by just about any salesperson. all you have to do is pick up the phone and ask.
a question you won't get answers to are like... how much profit does the dealership make on avg on each car? what is the true invoice of the car... not what we see on edmunds as dealer invoice, but true invoice meaning what the dealership had to pay for the car? why does the dealership charge $300+ for service A when its basically a glorified oil change? that should cost no more than $80
And I'm not being fair to AZ when I say this, "car salespeople are usually the worst source of automotive information". Because I think AZ is attempting to be helpful here, with limited success.
A ? for AZ..When a car is CPO by MB do they really check the car like they say they do. Because from my experience, I dont think so. On one purchase, the Vanity mirror was cracked & tires were improperly inflated. On my latest purchase, all tires were overinfllated & spare was underinflated & Ml was out of alignment. If they didnt check the obvious & simple things, did they check anything else? Imo, I think the dealership does the least work possible when you buy the car, figuring if something broke you would bring it back to get it fixed under warranty.
