Engine Oil for ML 320 - Diesel

So I've been reading that there are a number of approved oils besides the Mobil oil that I have to buy from the dealer ($6 a quart). Is there one that most people prefer, or that has a proven track record with the diesel engine? I saw reference to the Elf oil (can't recall which one) on the E320 discussion forum. Is that preferred for our trucks, even over the Mobil?

I settled on Amsoil 5-40 euro formula. Its readily available and meets all the Diesel specs and got an ok from my dealer. Mobil of the right spec is tough to find except at a dealer and to those of us who live a few hours from a dealership Amsoil is easy to get. I also invested 40 bucks in a an oil evacuator which is a handy and very effective tool.

Whichever Elf oil it is that's 229.51 compliant, it's now being marketed in USA under the Total brand name.
