What kind of sensor? Is it some kind of parking sensor?
Sort of. It detects the presence of a vehicle in your blind spot. I test drove an Audi Q7 in the spring with that feature. Pretty cool actually.
Audi places two 24GHz radar sensors in the rear bumpers so it scans backward, left and right. The sensors have a 50 meter range.
The system has a series of LEDs on the mirror housing on each side.
When the Audi senses a car coming in the blind spot (and accelerating), the LEDs turn yellow. If despite this you engage the turn signal then the LEDs turn red and start to flash to warn you.
The system does NOT intervene in any way (applying brakes, steering, etc) mechanically. It is just meant to assist the driver.
