I have a 2008 ml350, and this weekend noticed that the (4) philips head screws that holds the license plate to the stainless steel plate bracket mounted to the tailgate are too long, even with the license plate frame in place. The screws actually contact the painted surface of the lift gate. I took off the license plate, and the stainless steel plate bracket, and sure enough, the screws are marking the paint on the liftgate. I am sure after a time of road vibration, the paint and primer will be gone, and the exposed metal of the lift gate will start to rust. I put 2 stainless steel lock washers under the screw head on each screw, this kept the screw from going in so far, and now it can not hit the lift gate. What happened to the engineers that build these things? if I noticed this, why would it slip by them? If these screws are supplied by the dealership, rather then the factory I can understand the oversight.
How about the 2 light bulbs above the license plate. Are those prone to burning out or having problems? (like the brake light assemblies for example)
and I thought I was going wacko on this one.
so answer is yes, mine seem to alternate, neither is actually burned out, but I first noticed one was not illuminated, I took it apart to find that the bulb had slipped out of the little holder (its like a fuse connector) so I plugged it back in and now that one works, but the other one doesn't... I think its another "quality" control issue just not refined.

Yea mine was acting up on right side (off/on over last couple of weeks), and then it finally crapped out. The bulb looked dark and burned out. Let's see if the new Chinese bulb lasts longer.
the long screws are installed by the dealer, there are no screws when they come new, probably some poter put them in, mercedes has bullitins about using a proper length screw, go yell at the dealer and have them repaint the liftgate
