My "trusty" 2007- with 20k miles- has now failed my three separate times recently.
Twice, it failed to start with engine warm while shopping.
Yesterday, while I was driving at 60 mph on the hiway, the engine just shut down and I had to crawl to side of the road and stop, not a pleasant experience.
The first 2 times were diagnosed as 2 separate problems. First a faulty fuel rail-replaced. The second time as a faulty signal from the trans that the engine was in drive,so I could not start-trans reflashed(whatever that means).
On the latest shut down at highway speed , the engine finally started after a half hour rest. I am bringing the car to Mb on Monday morn to read the latest codes to see the latest problem.Hopefully the diagnostic computer will be telling...
I am disgusted.
As someone with an order in place for an ML CDI, this kind of report is concerning to say the least. The big question this raises for me is, does the CDI have recurring quality problems, or is this a dealership doing a poor job of diagnosing and fixing the original problem? Either way, it's a bummer for you and I would hope you'd have a better experience. I can't help but wonder, though, if you have one issue that still hasn't been correctly repaired.
I wil be taking my new 08 320 cdi on a long shakedown cruise through the rockies ( a few thousand miles)and when i get back i will post on everything from problems to performance to fuel milege in a few weeks.

That will be helpful information.
I did a 1800 mile road trip in my ML350 in December, mileage ranged 17-20mpg, no oil consumed, at cruising speeds often in the mid-90's with top speed attained of 110. No breakdowns or malfunctions developed during the trip.

Thanks all for the input.
I gave MB tech the crankshaft position sensor as an issue.
I dropped off this am at MB dealer and they could not restart the engine to bring back into the repair area- they had to push it!
It was very embarassing for them, but at least a code signal came up.
I have not heard back from them, but will keep you posted on the outcome.
This is my first real problem with the car. It really drives extremely well- handling, power, smoothness and hope there is a real comprehensive fix.

At least it won't be a "could not duplicate issue" situation. As a new CDI owner, I am following your trials just in case...
I don't think I would necessarily agree with that, although the M certainly PARKS easier than the S550. Too paranoid to take that car out much, so it just depreciates ungodly amounts of money on an annual basis.
