I just bought a '07 ML 320 CDI and was shockedto find that I had to but the hitch and the brake/light wiring kit as a package at over $1100. Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative?
i have just fitted a detchable tow bar(westfalia) which cost £210.00. it was quite easy to fit. the wiring kit was £180.00 but an electrician is fitting it for me, because it is quite complex. i fitted a detachable hitch because the bar is totally hidden when not in use.
Look in the DIY thread of this W164 forum and you will find how to install an aftermarket hitch and wiring. If any questions, let me know.
but be aware that the max load is less (3500 lbs vs 7000 lbs). But for any normal trailer this is sufficient. I use it just for a bike rack.
You can also install yourself the OEM hitch and adapt the bumper skin. Seems not to be difficult, but I have to see the first wrte-up of removing the bumper.
Last: do a search and you will find on-line store that sell the OEM package (get the correct partnumber for the package first) for about 750 dollar.
