I have an '07 ML350 and ever since purchase have noticed that when putting the car into park or drive that there is a rather loud transmittion/shift sound. All past cars have been rather silent when putting into gear and park and just wondering if this was common with all ML's and/or if any of you have the same noises.
I think I have myself worried after reading all of the transmittion issues with earlier models.
My transmission and engine both make strange (to me) noises when parking, but it runs and shifts great. I chalk it up to Mercedes engineering and technology compared to my past vehicles. Until I see smoke or fluid where it's not suppose to be and feel problems when driving I'm not going to worry about it.

What about putting it into drive... does it make the same noise? Almost a grinding kind of sound.
When l was in for service a month ago...my SA was telling me that they had 2 07 ML350's in for valve body replacements......$2000.00 just for the valve body!!!!lf it is making a sound, bring it in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the sounds of it, that is entirely normal. The electronic shift mechanism activates a solenoid or some such device that makes sort of a strange sound as it switches the transmission--nothing to worry about.

what you are hearing is the ISM motor that is on the side of the tranmsission. the sound is NORMAL. all the cars that have the newer steering column shift level have the ISm motor (intellegent servo motor). the sound is the motor shifting the tranny. the sales person should have explained this when you purchased the car.
this has nothing to do with the valve body.
