ignition lock cylinder & ignition switch

I asked MercedesShop FastLane the following:
Subject: ignition lock cylinder & ignition switch
for 2003 ML 350 Inspiration Edition. Are special tools required for removal of old part & installation of new part?
Their answer:

Hello
This is a dealer only service.
Computer programming is required = the MB STAR scanner is the only tool that will work.
The vehicle will be dead until after re-programming...
My comment:

So, we have no alternative to dealer service on this. or as they say in Italy...a'fa nap !!!

He is correct. The ignition switch contains the brains that read your key and allow the vehicle to start and the wheel to unlock. Dealer programming is required.
