The stock Contis on my ML 350 lasted 10k miles (yes, rotated every 3k miles). Put on a set of Hankook DynaPros, lasted me about 25k miles (also rotated every 3k miles). I have a pair of Kumho Soluses on there right now...
The stock Contis don't come with a full 11/32" tread, they come with much less, so its not surprising they wear so badly...not to mention they're (in my opinion) just a horrible tire (not dangerous or anything, just nothing to write home about).
I do a lot of mountain driving so my mileages are probably atypical (towards the lower end), but my tires are lasting me about 25k at most on my ML350.
On my ML63 replaced my stock Continentals at 9500 mi. Probably could have gone another 5000 mi., but they were wearing fast and getting noisy. Replaced them with Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asymmetricos in 305/45-20. Love'em. Awesome setup.

i'm fighting with conti currently to get at the very least a partial credit towards replacements!!!
i'm gonna replace these shortly with yokos if conti doens't come through.
Unfortunately the 4X4 Contacts do seem to wear quite badly, particularly if you have them in V-rated spec. I had these on my previous ML, in 275 width and they lasted me only a year. Towards the end, the ride definitely deteriorated significantly. I went with the Michelins as replacements after and was extremely happy.
When I picked up my W164 ML, I made sure that they had the Michelin Latitude Tour HP tires on them. Fantastic and would definitely recommend those! As for Pirellis, other ML owners have found them noisy towards the 50% mark onwards, particularly if you have the Scorpion Zeros. For this reason, I personally am going to avoid them and stick with Michelins.

We seem to be in the same neighbourhood...and I wondered where you bought your Michelins?
Also, when I picked up my W164ML from the dealer there was a brochure in amongst the manuals congratulating me on my Michelins etc etc - even though the car came with Continentals - which I don't like at all. I assume the dealer switched the Michelins for the cheaper Contis. Anyone else have this happen?

The MLs come from the factory with either the Contis or the Michelins. It really depends on what production batch your car was produced in. The dealer would not have switched the Michelins with the Contis.
Heh, my owner's manual package came with brochures from Pirelli, Michelin, Dunlop, and Continental!! Which dealer did your vehicle come from?
If I were to buy my tires, I would probably go to Tires Unlimited in Port Coquitlam, or more likely Tire Trends in Maple Ridge. That being said, the last few times I've just gotten tires from down South because they're so much cheaper!
well.... finally got to conti warranty repair/exchange.... they gave me a 40% credit towards a new set of contis... so instead of paying $172/tire i paid $104/tire.
fight with conti to get them replaced (at least discounted)
conti's phone # is 800.847.3349
