W163 or W164 ML350 Special edition

Just purchased an 05 Special Edition ML 350. But how do I know if it is a w163 or w164? The forums state that an 05 could be either. Be kind I'm a newbie. thanks!

I'm certain it's a W163 because the last gasp for this model run [1998-2005] was the "special edition" [I don't think there ever has been a W164 special edition model]. I think the exterior color was metallic silver, and the interior was a dark charcoal with lighter gray stitching [sound familiar]?

The two keys though are the body style and price. If it looks like the current ML, it's a W164. If not, it's a W163. And if you paid under $35K and the vehicle is in good shape, it likely is not a W164.

If it
has a space age plasticky dash
has a column shifter
has uneven door handles
can't fit a bicycle inside the trunk
has protusions/warts everywhere on the body
then its a 164.

Hope that helps.. ;-)

If yours is an 05 model year it is a W163. The "special Edition" is really no different than any other ML except for some trim and sheet metal changes. They tried to do something different in order to sell the last of them coming off the line. FYI, I had 2 W163's, a 98 ML320 and an 02 ML500. Both were OK vehicles but had a number of minor inconviences and difficulties that were take care of by my competent dealer. The W164 is by far the finest I have had and has been flawless since delivery in Sept of 05.

thanks for the information. My wife loves the vehicle, it only had 22000 miles on it so we still have the warranty if something goes wrong. thanks!
