While driving along in my 2006 ML 350, this message, as close as I remember it, appeared in the instrument display......."Warning - Check Oil Level at the Next Refueling Stop". I checked the level on the dipstick, and it was at the 7/8ths full mark. Where did this messare come from.............What triggered it? I've searched the manual and can find no source for an oil level sensor on the 350 engine..............
I have also had this happen to me twice already while on the autobahn. I pulled over at the first gas-station and found that the oil level was almost full. It was very hot when I was driving...and I was also going very fast... maybe it's a weird combo that sets it off?
Oh...and I have an 07 ML350.
What is it that enables/toggles this message? Is there a float or level switch located in the oilpan? Curious minds want to know.

Triggered by the odometer perhaps? When the message appeared on my ML 350 the mileage was about 6,800. I doubt it was from running hot and fast as the RPM was in the low 2,000s and the speed 55MPH at the time........
My take is that the vehicle has a sensor/s that attempts to make sure that the level of oil and its vescosity is within a certain range. If the car has burned off any oil causing erosion in the oil level in the engine, the sensor is triggered with the message to add 1 quart of fuel at next service stop. This message also did appear on our C class once. Conditions were mild, started car cold then accelerated heavily to get on to highway. Message came on as I came to the top of ramp to access highway.
I doubt the odometer does anything other than remind you that service is due at specific time/mileage. Dip stick should probably be the ultimate tool for determining consumption.
So does the ML350 have some oil level measurement sensor or not?

You know that the ML has an oil pressure monitor. It is reputed to also check the chemistry of the oil. Perhaps the age or contamination of the oil affects the sensors/software combination in such a manner to cause the warning. Poor gas, leaky rings, water in theoil, there are many sources of contaminates for oil. Winter grade (high viscousity) oil used in summer could lower viscosity at high temps.
I think only Mercedes can authoritatively answer this one.
Just make sure you check the dip stick for both level and color. The oil should never look cloudy or brown.

I thought only the ML500 had oil level sensor. I doubt that it checks chemistry of the oil.
Question still remains, does the ML350 have an oil level sensor. Or maybe the OP was getting a warning for low oil pressure.
