I just took my '06 ML350 into the dealer for a grinding noise when I turned the steering wheel from side to side after the ML had been driven for about 1 hour. (Warmed up). The shop foreman said the noise was coming from the steering column sleeve. There is a rubber insert that's causing the problem. He said that I am not the 1st to have this defect, in fact, Mercedes has redesigned a new part for replacement. Just wondered if any on else has had this problem ?
There is a TSB on this and my dealership had mine serviced last time when my car was in the shop. But they have to order the part in though because the shop did not have it in stock. All seems well now.
I have a 07 ml350. I notied at around 11K there was something amiss in the steering column when hitting bumps. If you hit a row of road markers just right, you could really get it going. It turned out to be a bearing/bushing in the column. Dealer fixed it right under warranty. That was the first and only issue so far.
Kenith, when you hit one or two bumps, did it feel like something was slightly loose in the steering and you maybe felt a bump a little too much in the hands? We may have this problem.

Bizarrely, I had exactly this problem in my 2000 E early in its life. Can't remember what they did, but it was reasnably major repair. No problems since.

Yes, it felt like something loose in the front end somewhere. I have felt this same feeling on old cars with worn tie rods. But those cars have other problems with tracking. Of course the ML350 was tracking perfectly. I also experienced this same type of feeling with my old 560 SEL after the turn signal switch was replaced. I took it back and they could not find the trouble. I put up with it for a while, then I figured it had to be something done while replacing the switch. It was. I found they did not get the air bag in just right and it was causing the feeling. I realigned the air bag and the problem went away. I mentioned this to the dealer, but they reported the trouble was with the bushing and bearings in the column itself. They fixed it.
The only way I know to describe it is there is a feeling in the steering wheel from feedback from bumps. But it does not move the wheel or change the tracking, just feels like something loose in the system.

Hope this helps,

Very helpful thanks. This is exaclty how I would describe our problem, which I first felt after the instrument panel had to be replaced (problems w/ fuel guage).
